After finishing 0-20 just a year ago, the El Paso Coyotes are on their way to a winning record in the Major Arena Soccer League after winning their final home game of the season Sunday night.
Although officially eliminated from the playoffs, the Coyotes claimed a hard-fought 14-13 overtime victory over the Kansas City Comets. The win gives El Paso a 10-10 record with two games left in the season.
Midfielder Christian Gutierrez scored three goals to guide the Coyotes in the home finale victory. Gutierrez continues to rank among the top five scorers in the league with 31 goals. Kansas City, 6-14 in the Central Division, was led by midfielder Bryan Perez with four goals.
The Coyotes have two games on the road to close out the season – 8 p.m. Friday, March 2, at the Turlock Express, and 8 p.m. Saturday, March 3, at the San Diego Sockers.
The games can be viewed online at MASLtv on YouTube.
El Paso will finish the season in third place in the Southwest Division, behind top-seeded Monterrey Flash, 20-1, and the Soles de Sonora, 14-7, in second.
Only the top two teams from the Southwest, Pacific, Eastern and Central Divisions qualify for the playoffs and the chance to vie for the Ron Newman Cup.
