The El Paso Coyotes kept their playoff hopes alive in the Major Arena Soccer League with a solid victory over Ontario Friday night.
The Coyotes held off the Ontario Fury 10-8 to move them closer to reclaiming second place in the Southwest Division. El Paso is now 9-9 and in third place, behind the Soles de Sonora, 10-6.
The top two teams from each division — Southwest, Pacific, Eastern and Central — qualify for the playoffs. The undefeated Monterrey Flash, who are 16-0 and in first place, have already clinched a spot in the playoffs.
In Friday’s win, El Paso received strong play from midfielders Christian Gutierrez (three goals) and Hugo Puentes (two goals), both among the top scorers in the league with 26 goals each. Forward Daniel Frias also scored two goals.
The Coyotes now head to Sonora for a showdown against the Soles at 8 p.m. MST on Saturday, February 17. Sonora, meanwhile, will play three matches before taking on El Paso; with all the games can be viewed online at MASLtv on YouTube.
The Coyotes will return to El Paso for their final home game of the regular season at 5 p.m. Sunday, February 25, against the Kansas City Comets at the Coliseum (4100 E. Paisano.)
Tickets, which are buy one, get one free, cost $5, $10, $15 and $25, and are free for kids. They are available at the Coliseum Box Office, all Ticketmaster outlets, by phone at 800-745-3000 and online.
