El Paso International Airport prepares for a busy Summer
Officials with El Paso International Airport (ELP) announced that the facility is regaining multiple non-stop flights and frequencies in June ahead of the summer of travel season.
“The airlines are showing confidence in our region by adding back the capacity we had prior to COVID-19; this is backed by a strong regional demand as people are becoming more comfortable flying,” said Sam Rodriguez, El Paso Aviation Director.
“In response, the airport has intensified cleaning and sanitation, concessionaires have increased staffing, extended hours and opened more dining options. Overall, we are ready to welcome back our passengers.”
Non-stop flight destinations that will resume this summer with increased frequency include, Austin, San Antonio, Los Angeles, Orlando/Sanford, San Diego and Chicago as well as a new non-stop destination to Charlotte, North Carolina beginning in August.
Non-stop flights to these destinations were suspended last year in response to decreased demand brought on by the COVID-19 pandemic. With more of the population becoming vaccinated and restrictions being eased across the country, flight demands have increased and are expected to climb throughout the summer.
Leisure and personal traffic have made a strong comeback this Spring. In April, ELP saw an incredible overall total passenger traffic increase of 685.5 percent over April 2020. With additional available seats in June, airport traffic is expected to remain strong.
