El Paso ISD’s Shawn Mena receives Yale education award

Shawn Mena, the principal at Franklin High School and El Paso ISD’s Interim Assistant Superintendent of High Schools, has been recognized by the Yale Office of Undergraduate Admissions as the recipient of the 2021 Yale Educator Award.

The Yale Educator Recognition Program recognizes outstanding individuals from around the world who support and inspire the students to perform at high levels to achieve excellence. More than 300 educators were nominated for the award with 71 receiving the recognition.

“It was a privilege to receive recognition from such a prestigious university,” Mena said. “I am so blessed to be able to serve the amazing students on the Franklin campus and be a part of their success stories.”

Mena was nominated by 2021 Franklin grad Eleanor Schoenbrun, who received a QuestBridge Scholar to attend Yale University this fall.

“I am grateful and honored to be nominated by such a beautiful young lady, Eleanor Schoenbrun,” Mena said. “She fills my heart.”

Mena was named El Paso ISD Interim Assistant Superintendent of High Schools back in August 2021.
