El Paso Independent School District Superintendent Juan Cabrera last month received his annual performance evaluation from the Board of Trustees, which voted unanimously to extend his employment contract with the District through 2021.
Board President Fenenbock cited the superintendent’s role in implementing key academic initiatives, as well as the District’s fiscal stability and improvements in student opportunity and community engagement as factors that helped them give Cabrera a positive performance evaluation.
“The District is headed in the right direction and we are confident that Mr. Cabrera’s leadership will help us meet the goals we have set out to help improve the lives of our students,” said Board President Fenenbock. “His contract extension secures his continued presence in EPISD and guarantees that we will have much-needed stability at the helm of the Cabrera did not seek a salary increase as part of his formative evaluation.
EPISD has seen several new academic initiatives implemented or expanded over the last year. The initiatives range in scope from districtwide dual language, technology integration, focus on early-childhood and active learning techniques.
In the fall, the District rolled out its PowerUp initiative that distributed more than 17,000 laptops to high-school students in order to make digital learning a priority. PowerUp has given students the tools they need to be future-ready learners.
EPISD also opened two project-based learning centers — Cougar New Tech at Franklin High and Rocket New Tech at Irvin High — to give students a different, collaborative and more independent approach to teaching and learning. The Mesita Early Childhood Development Center at Vilas opened this fall in partnership with UTEP to provide families with research- based instruction targeting our youngest students.
“Our students deserve the best and we as a District have been working hard to provide quality learning opportunities to all our students,” Cabrera said. “We have the chance to do something special and innovative over the next 5 to 10 years, and I want to be part of the team that makes it happen.”
