High-school students in EPISD will have the chance to keep the PowerUp laptops they received this fall through the summer — an effort by the District to encourage continued learning even during the summer vacation.
The District also announced that graduating seniors will be given the option to buy their PowerUp laptop at a prorated cost that could provide students to access to technology at an affordable price.
“Our records show that students throughout the District have done a wonderful job of taking care of the devices,” said Carmen Arrieta-Candelaria, EPISD’s Deputy Superintendent for Finance and Operations. “We think it beneficial, then, to allow these students to keep the devices over the summer so that they can continue to have access to the technology and digital programs that will keep them learning even when they’re on vacation.”
Students in grades 9 through 11 who are expected to return to EPISD next school year may keep their devices through the summer break. The Responsible Use Agreement their parents signed at the beginning of the school year will apply through the summer months.
The District is launching a website called “PowerUp Your Summer,” where instructional opportunities will be posted in order to keep students academically engaged through the break. The website will be available at www.episd.org/powerup.
Parents who opt to return the laptop to the District are being asked to have their children return the device to the campus bookroom clerk for safekeeping. The computer will be re-issued to the student at the start of the school year in August.
Students who are not returning to EPISD for the upcoming school year should return their device to their campus bookroom clerk by the end of the school year.
Seniors will get the change buy their PowerUp laptops for use after graduation at a cost of $135. Students will have the option to return the device to the District or make arrangements for purchase with their campus bookroom clerk.
