El Paso ISD’s Young Women’s School now Accepting Applications

Girls who will be sixth- and seventh-graders during the upcoming 2017- 2018 academic year may now apply to be part of the first group of students who will be part of the innovative EPISD Young Women’s School.

The Young Women’s School is a partnership between EPISD and New Tech Network designed to engage students and expose them to innovation in instruction based on science, technology, engineering, arts and math (STEAM). It also aims to instill learning that models real-world contexts through Project-Based Learning.

“EPISD is at the forefront of single-gender education. While other cities and districts have opened all-girl campuses, EPISD’s Young Women’s School will be the only single-gender school that has a STEAM and Project-Based Learning focus through the New Tech network,” Superintendent Juan Cabrera said.

The school will kick off with 200 students in grades sixth and seventh. Each year, 100 students will be added to the school as it expands by a grade. The Young Women’s School will ultimately serve students in grades sixth through 12th.Principal Dr. Cynthia Ontiveros said the school will be known for far more than the gender of its student population. She said the school will rely on rigor and service to help them prepare their students for life after high school.

“Students will explore integrated courses that connect science, technology, engineering and mathematics, leveraged through the arts; and they will participate in service learning projects and experiences directly connected to their community,” she said. “The Young Women’s School will maintain high expectations for students to accept the challenges and rigors of the program and stress a high-degree of parental involvement.”

The school will be centrally located at the site of the current Armendariz Middle School at 2231 Arizona Ave. Transportation from within the boundaries of EPISD will be provided.

Students will be selected for admission to the Young Women’s School through a lottery system with preference in a certain number of seats given to girls who currently attend Armendariz Middle School or an elementary school in that feeder pattern.

The deadline to apply for this all-girls campus is April 7, 2017.

Parents can apply online or download a paper application by visiting www.episd.org and clicking on the Young Women’s School banner. The school is open to girls from throughout El Paso County.

Acceptance notices will be delivered the week of April 24.
