The UTEP tennis team (4-8) derailed Arizona Christian (2-7), 7-0, on the road Wednesday afternoon. It marks the second straight road win for the Miners, who claimed every match contested on the day.
“We played solid today,” UTEP head coach Ivan Fernandez said. “It is good to get another win, and we can return home with some momentum for the match on Sunday.”
UTEP was dominant in doubles action, dropping a combined three games in the matches. Kathleen Percegona and Elena Dibattista took down Sylvie Schoenen and Emma Troyer, 6-0, at No. 3 doubles. Veronika Lebisova and Thassane Abrahim waxed Deondra Bacchus and Johanna Lutz, 6-1, at the top spot while Carlotta Mencaglia and Eve Daniels posted a 6-2 victory against Vittoria Quadri and Karla Grobbelaar at No. 2 doubles.
It was more of the same for the Miners in singles action, who used straight set wins across the board to complete the day. Dibattista blanked Troyer, 6-0, 6-0, at No. 4 singles. Daniels was equally as impressive, beating Samantha Salim by the identical score at No. 5 singles.
Lina Sachica bested Grobbelaar, 6-0, 6-1, at No. 3 singles. Laura Schmitz also only lost one game, as she blasted Schoenen, 6-1, 6-0, at No. 6 singles. Percegona took care of business with a 7-5, 6-2, win over Bacchus at No. 1 singles while Carlotta Mencaglia knocked off Johanna Lutz, 6-2, 6-3, at No. 2 singles.
The Miners will look to push their winning streak to three when they play host to UTPB at 12 p.m. MT Sunday.
