Officials with the El Paso Opera and Opera UTEP announced Giving Voice, a collaboration between the two organizations that is the first in a new annual series amplifying Latinx opera singers locally and nationally.
For this inaugural year, accomplished homegrown Mexican-American baritone, Luis Alejandro Orozco will be the honored headlining artist.
Orozco’s residency will include student masterclasses and joint performances with Opera UTEP, an industry panel discussion and an inspiring Giving Voice recital with pianist Michael Lewis.

1. OPERA UTEP STUDENT MASTERCLASS WITH LUIS ALEJANDRO OROZCO
Hosted by Opera UTEP on Friday, October 9, 2:30 p.m. – 4:00 p.m. A digital masterclass with Luis Alejandro Orozco with the voice students of the University of Texas at El Paso conducted via video conference.
2. INDUSTRY PANEL DISCUSSION WITH SPECIAL GUESTS
Hosted by El Paso Opera on Friday, October 9, 7:30 p.m. A digital panel discussion with special guests Luis Alejandro Orozco, Ricardo Herrera, Stephanie Sanchez, and Justin Lucero, moderated by El Paso Opera’s Artistic Associate Cherry Duke.
These guests are all Latinx members of the professional opera industry with ties to El Paso. For the one-hour conversation, we will discuss what it’s like for Latinx artists working in the opera world, touch on experiences in the current state of the industry, and address our thoughts about our community in a post-8/3/19 world.

3. GIVING VOICE RECITAL FEATURING LUIS ALEJANDRO OROZCO

A digital recital with our special headliner guest, baritone Luis Alejandro Orozco, and pianist Michael Lewis. Orozco will perform a specially-curated program exploring art and the Hispanic experience: including A Question of Light, a song cycle by critically-acclaimed
composer Jake Heggie as well as Spanish language selections by luminaries Alfonso Esparza Oteo, Agustín Lara, and María Grever.

4. OPERA UTEP: GIVING VOICE CONCERT
Hosted by Opera UTEP on Tuesday, October 13, 7:30pm — Streamed on Facebook Live Opera UTEP’s program features arias from Spanish zarzuelas as well as art songs, romanzas and boleros by Latinx composers, all in celebration of Hispanic Heritage Month.
Special guest baritone, Luis Alejandro Orozco will be a featured soloist. In addition to Mr. Orozco and Opera UTEP students, performers include members of the UTEP voice faculty and pianist Dr. Esequiel Meza.
