El Paso Public Library Receives State Award

The City of El Paso is proud to announce that the El Paso Public Library has received the 2021 Achievement of Library Excellence Award from the Texas Municipal Library Directors Association (TMLDA).

The TMLDA, an affiliate of the Texas Municipal League, recognizes Texas libraries that meet a high level of excellence in programing and services while contributing educational opportunities to the community.

The Achievement of Library Excellence Award is given to libraries that exhibit excellence in ten categories including, services to underserved communities, programming for adults and families, literacy support for all ages, workforce development, digital inclusion of programs and services, and community partnerships, among others.

“More than anything, this award is a testament to the hard work and dedication of library staff who have continued to work diligently to deliver library services to our community during the pandemic despite many obstacles,” said El Paso Public Library Director Norma Martinez. “We are proud that the TMLDA chose to recognize the important role that libraries play in our community.”

The El Paso Public Library has demonstrated distinction with its many programs and services including their online high school program, their virtual and digital services, their efforts to continue programming for children and families throughout the pandemic and general service delivery.

According to the Texas State Library and Archives Commission, 565 public libraries exist in Texas. Of those libraries, only 59 received the Achievement of Library Excellence Award in 2021.

The Texas Municipal Library Directors Association (TMLDA) promotes the public library profession, improves the methods of providing library service, and maintains high standards of professional ethics.
