‘Heartbroken’ El Pasoans Fighting Hunger Food Bank temporarily closes one location, Volunteers needed

Due to the drawdown of the Texas National Guard, and the two-week gap between the start of a new group of AmeriCorps members, officials with El Pasoans Fighting Hunger Food Bank will have to temporarily shutter their Westside food distribution site.

Without volunteers or funding to hire additional manpower to operate the location, officials say the closure was necessary.

“We are heartbroken to be forced to make this difficult decision, but without adequate manpower in the form of volunteers, Texas National Guard and AmeriCorps, or funding to hire additional staff we cannot sustain all of our current food distributions.” officials said Thursday.

The site, located at 5300 Doniphan, will be closed during the weeks of:

  • August 30 to September 3
  • September 6 to 10
  • This week (8-23 to 8-27) the Westside location is giving out extra food to its clients to help cover the gap.

“Though the Doniphan location will be closed during these two weeks, the public can visit the El Pasoans Fighting Hunger Food Bank site or Kelly Center for Hunger Relief,” officials added.

Officials say the situation is also fueled by the fact that the need still continues. The food bank is still seeing an increase in the need for food assistance by those in our community who continue to struggle to get back on their feet and put food on their table.

“We are seeing high need for food assistance and though we have some volunteers, we need volunteers and donations to support the level of need for emergency food distribution locations as well as building emergency food boxes for the homeless, elderly and other vulnerable populations,” Susan Goodell, CEO El Pasoans Fighting Hunger Food Bank said.

“We are asking the community to please come out and volunteer or make a financial contribution. We need you! Bring your family, your friends and your co-workers. Volunteers are so vital to be able to serve the community.”

The new schedule is as follows:

West Distribution site, 5300 Doniphan will have NO distributions the weeks of:
