El Pasoans Fighting Hunger officials detail plans for $9M gift from MacKenzie Scott

On Friday, El Pasoans Fighting Hunger Food Bank officially announced the gift of $9 million from Philanthropist and Author MacKenzie Scott.

“We are incredibly grateful and humbled to receive this donation, which is truly a gift to the people of our community,” said Susan Goodell, Chief Executive Officer, El Pasoans Fighting Hunger.

“It is only through the generosity of people like Ms. Scott that we will be able to continue our work to serve those who struggle with hunger every day. The need will continue to be great in the months and years to come, and this gift will help ensure that our food bank will be here to answer the call.”

This gift, will be utilized to serve people experiencing food insecurity in the tri-county area of El Paso, Culberson and Hudspeth Counties. This gift is the largest gift the food bank has ever received.

Pre-COVID, 23% of area residents lived in poverty and were food insecure. During COVID, the number of food insecure people has grown
at an astronomical rate. In the first eight months of the pandemic, El Pasoans Fighting Hunger has distributed 117,635,949 pounds of food – the equivalent of 98,029,957 meals for our community’s most vulnerable people.

As the COVID-19 pandemic continues, EPFH is committed to serving communities and individuals facing hunger across El Paso, Culberson and Hudspeth Counties, wherever they are.

The more than generous gift is a result of Ms. Scott and her team of advisors’ efforts to identify organizations that support people suffering from the economic effects of the crisis.

The group focused special attention to identify non-profits operating in communities facing high projected food insecurity, high measures of racial inequity, high local poverty rates, and low access to philanthropic capital.
