El Paso’s largest mental health walk set for this Saturday

The local affiliate of the National Alliance on Mental Illness, NAMI El Paso, will be hosting their 9th Annual NAMIWalks event on September 21, 2019 at Ascarate Park.

“Due to recent events, mental illness has been used as a scapegoat,” NAMI officials shared via a news release. “NAMI El Paso, NAMI Texas, and NAMI National adamantly oppose this. NAMIWalks El Paso’s public, active display of support for those living with mental health conditions is one important way we are changing how El Pasoans view people living with a mental health condition.”

Check in is at 8:30AM and the Walk begins at 10AM.

NAMI El Paso officials say  their event is “El Paso’s largest mental health event, and NAMI El Paso’s largest fundraiser.”

“1 in 5 El Pasoans is affected by a mental health condition in a given year….NAMIWalks El Paso hopes to spread a message of hope for those who fear seeking help,” officials added.

Registration is free for the event, but participants are encouraged to raise funds and donate.

All the funds raised from NAMIWalks El Paso benefit NAMI El Paso’s mission to provide advocacy, public awareness, support and education so that all individuals living with mental health conditions and their families can build better lives.

All of NAMI El Paso’s educational classes and support groups are available at no cost to those who need them.
