Celebrating its 9th year, El Paso’s Sun City Pridefest starts their five-day celebration Wednesday.
According to their website, the El Paso Sun City Pride (EPSCP) Organization was founded in 2007 to serve as the social directors of El Paso’s LGBT community and to “bring the great City of El Paso a PRIDE Celebration it rightfully deserves.”
In keeping with their mission, the 9th annual Pridefest features sponsored events, parties, a parade and a week-ending celebration and after party at Wet-n-Wild on Sunday.
The annual Pridefest parade is set for Saturday, June 4th and will have local groups and floats. The parade starts at 10 am, but participants expected to arrive as early as 8am for line-up. The route begins at Houston Park (900 Montana Ave) and concludes at Pride Square (500 N Stanton St.
This year’s Grand Marshals are Jaymes Vaughan and Professional Wrestler Cassandro.
World-renowned wrestler and winner of several world titles, Cassandro has toured the world for nearly three decades, but had his start on the U.S/Mexico border. Vaughan currently hosts the nationally syndicated Celebrity Page TV and appears as a Top Talker on The Talk on CBS.
Aside from the celebratory facet of the events, organizers say that “Pridefest celebrates the accomplishments & contributions made by the El Paso LGBT community and to celebrate our sexual identity, our cultures, our families, and our individuality.”
They add that all the events also serve to “help raise awareness to the on-going struggle for civil rights and help thousands discover the breadth of the LGBT Community in El Paso.”
Through their events, EPSCP is able to fund raise which, in turn, allows them to provide scholarships within the Borderland so as to “increase the diversity, visibility & unity, in and between, the LGBT & Straight communities of El Paso and its surrounding areas.”
