One local barber college is looking to start an annual tradition of offering free haircuts before the first day of classes.
El Pipo’s owner and founder Hector “El Pipo” Barragan is teaming up with the Assistance League of El Paso”s Youth Auxiliary and beginning August 2, the families of La Posada homes will take to the chairs of the barber college for haircuts.
La Posada homes is a non-profit refuge for women and their children who are experiencing homelessness, domestic violence, abandonment, or lack of opportunities. The offer is open to all shelters in El Paso, for moms and their children.
Barragan said, “I know it’s tough to make ends meet especially when you have left a bad situation. Our heart goes out to these special families for seeking a better and happier life. We just want to be part of that.”
The free, regular haircuts (excludes fades, designs and specialty cuts) will be for the entire year to families living in El Paso area shelters. Moms and their school age children will receive haircuts not only for the beginning of school but for the entire year as necessary.
“We want our kids to start the school year right, there is no need for any young man to go to school todo greñudo because mom and dad couldn’t afford a haircut after getting all the school supplies. Sometimes it’s just a home haircut for mijo. We want mijo to show up on the first day of school with a sharp new haircut…we’re all in this world to help each other and this is our small way of making El Paso a little better and much better looking…” Barragan added.
Pipo’s also offers free haircuts to those that are homeless. “Just walk in anytime and we will take care of you. with dignity and respect,” stated Barragan.
These special offers are good Tuesday thru Friday, 10am to 4pm at El Pipo Barber College located at 1012 North Raynor Street.
