Emergence Health Network celebrates Autism Awareness Month

Emergence Health Network officials Thursday reminded the community that April is Autism Awareness Month, offering their support of efforts to create a more inclusive community for those with Autism.

“This month is not only about awareness, but during the month and every day we what to focus on the importance of acceptance and understanding of those with autism,” said Kristi Daugherty, EHN Chief Executive Officer.

As part of their celebration, officials with EHN introduce a new team member – Dr. Carla Alvarado – a Child Psychiatrist who Specializes in Autism.

“At EHN we know the importance of exceptional care from exceptional people.  So, we are proud to have Dr. Carla Alvarado as part of our team of mental health providers.  Dr. Alvarado is a highly qualified child/adolescent psychiatrist who also specializes in treating those with autism.  She is a great recourse for our community,” added Daugherty.  “We are fortunate to have her on board.”

Autism affects an estimated 1 in 54 children each year and impacts families across all racial, ethnic, and socioeconomic groups. Generally, the disorder is seen as a different way of thinking for these individuals.

“Those with autism process life and experiences in the world differently than others,  but through efforts such as Autism Awareness Month or what is also referred to as Autism Acceptance Month we promote inclusion and work to assure that everyone affected by the disorder are able to receive services and achieve a good quality of life,” said Dr. Alvarado, EHN Medical Director, Child and Adolescent Psychiatrist.

Emergence Health Network is also one of only two providers in El Paso that administers the Autism Diagnostic Observation Schedule (ADOS) which is a standardized test for identifying kids with Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD).

EHN is the Local Mental Health and IDD Authority in El Paso and provides a wide array of services for those with mental/behavioral health concerns, developmental disabilities, and/or substance use disorders.
