Entrepreneurs to Share Business Ideas at UTEP Today

The Hub of Human Innovation and two local entrepreneurs will present their startup ideas at 1 Million Cups, a free program from 4:30 to 6 p.m. Thursday, Nov. 9, 2017, in UTEP’s Business Administration Building, Room 309.

1 Million Cups is a national program started by the Kauffman Foundation to engage, connect and educate entrepreneurs from many disciplines with their communities. The program’s name is based on the belief that entrepreneurs network and discover solutions over a million cups of coffee.

University staff, students and faculty who are interested in entrepreneurship should attend, said David Zubia, Ph.D., professor of electrical engineering and one of the event’s organizers.

“We believe that this event supports the UTEP Edge principles in the areas of entrepreneurship, leadership and communication,” said Zubia, who referenced the University’s new philosophy that tries to interest students in high-impact experiences.

Student organizer Nicolle Ramirez, senior organizational and corporate communication major, said 1 Million Cups has multiple benefits at the academic and professional levels. She called it “empowering” because it got her to think about becoming an entrepreneur.

“It can influence students’ career choices and provide network opportunities with company experts who have experienced success and failure,” Ramirez said.

Nancy Lowery, Hub vice president of operations, called 1 Million Cups a valuable tool to build the region’s startup community. She said its planned expansion at UTEP would benefit the institution’s thriving group of entrepreneurs and provide a gathering point for the region’s innovators.

The Hub, a tax-exempt business incubator designed to accelerate the growth of innovative startups, hosts 1 Million Cups El Paso at 9 a.m. Wednesdays at its office, 500 W. Overland, Suite 230.

The weekly sessions allow two entrepreneurs to tell their stories of achievement and adversity.
