EPCC Employee’s Excellence Is a Great Role Model for Students

The master’s thesis of Jessie S. Arellano, Grants Specialist, at the EPCC Office of Grants Management & Development was recently selected as Outstanding Thesis, College of Liberal Arts, by the Graduate School at the University of Texas at El Paso (UTEP). Her research thesis, entitled Who is Willing to Speak Up and Why? Examining Individual and Organizational Predictors of Employee Voice Behavior in Higher Education Institutions, is an example of her passion towards education and efforts that support faculty, staff and students.

Ms. Arellano is currently pursuing a doctoral degree in educational leadership and during the last few years attained a bachelor’s degree in Organizational & Corporate Communication and a master’s degree in Communication at UTEP. Her educational journey, however, began at EPCC. Jessie has attained two associate degrees and attributes her good learning habits and solid educational foundation to the experiences she had while attending classes at EPCC. She feels that EPCC is indeed the best place to start, “EPCC offered a non-traditional student as myself, a single, full-time working mother, the flexibility to take evening courses and free support services. For instance, the Writing Center assisted in enhancing my writing skills which are beneficial in my educational and professional careers.”

Jessie’s passion for education inspires her to contribute to the community. She serves as the Public Relations Officer for the EPCC Classified Staff Association (CSA) and is a member of the Association of Women in the Community College (AWCC). Through these organizations, as well as others in the community, she has enjoyed participating in volunteer efforts to support the borderland, such as Rio Grande cleanup, turkey drives, school supply drives, and Karaoke Extravaganza to raise money for student scholarships. She is also a role model for her two sons, who are also EPCC alumni. Studying together with her sons and encouraging each other during challenging times are some of Jessie’s fondest memories during her studies.

The EPCC External Relations, Communications & Development Division is proud to congratulate Jessie Arellano on her success and looks forward to her continued contributions in her work at EPCC.
