EPCC Tejana named National Athlete of the Week

EPCC’s Faith Nyathi was named the National Junior College Athletic Association (NJCAA) Division 1 female athlete of the week by the U.S. Track & Field and Cross Country Coaches Association (USTFCCCA).

She led the El Paso Community College Women’s Cross-Country team to a first-place finish at the New Mexico Highlands Invitational in Hobbs, New Mexico. The men’s team took third place at the meet.

Individually at the Invitational, Nyathi won the race with a time for the 5K of 18:50, an impressive one minute, 24.5 seconds ahead of her closest competitor. Leading the men was Adams Biwott who finished second with a time of 26:03 for the 7K men’s race.

Faith comes to EPCC from Zimbabwe. She is a freshman majoring in Kinesiology. “I heard of EPCC’s dominate Cross Country team in Zimbabwe and aimed at running here all along.”

The Tejana’s next race will be on October 16th in Las Vegas, New Mexico.
