EPCF’s 32nd annual Spirit of Giving adapts to coronavirus pandemic

Starting Thanksgiving week, Spirit of Giving trees return to Cielo Vista Mall and Sunland Park Mall, with just a couple of changes due to Covid-19

“This is the time of year to get into the Spirit of Giving…helping people in a personal way is a grand gift to us all,” program officials shared. “That’s what the El Paso Community Foundation’s 32nd annual Spirit of Giving is all about – donating gifts anonymously to children, elderly, and people with special needs who might otherwise go without this holiday season.”

Snowflake-shaped tags adorn the trees; on those tags are the stories of boys, girls, men, and women served by nearly two dozen area nonprofits. Pick the tag with the story that moves you, purchase the gift, attach the snowflake tag to it, and place it in a gift bag (please don’t wrap it).

Generous El Pasoans have donated more than 61,000 gifts since 1989.

For those who purchase a gift from the Cielo Vista Mall tree, they are asked to not return it to the mall. Instead, they’ll be able to bring it to the Spirit of Giving Drive-by/Drop-off event at the El Paso Community Foundation headquarters located at 333 North Oregon, across from San Jacinto Plaza, during the following dates and times:

Friday, December 11, 8 a.m. to 6 p.m.

Saturday, December 12, 9 a.m. to 4 p.m.

Monday – Wednesday, December 14-15-16, 8 a.m. to 6 p.m.

For those that pick a tag from the Sunland Park Mall tree, bring the gift to the mall office on the second floor, near the Food Court, between 8 a.m. and 5 p.m. Mondays through Fridays. The after-hours number to call is 915-581-2288. The deadline to drop-off gifts there is 5 p.m. Monday, December 21.

Gift-givers also may donate gifts through the El Paso Community Foundation’s Spirit of Giving virtual tree .

“Just click on a tag, pay for the item and the Community Foundation will ensure it is delivered. Or, you can purchase the gift yourself, attach the tag, place it in a gift bag and bring it by during the Spirit of Giving Drive-by/Drop-off event,” EPFC officials added.

The deadline to donate or drop-off a gift from the virtual tree is 6 p.m. Wednesday, December 16.

The El Paso Community Foundation thanks our Sponsors – Cielo Vista Mall, Sunland Park Mall, and iHeart Radio – and their Community Partners who’ve stepped up to help purchase gifts this year: Bank of America/Merrill; the El Paso Fire Department; GECU Investment & Trust Services; Hello Amigo; The Hospitals of Providence; Kappa Delta Chi; Lauterbach Borschow; MIMCO; Progress 321; the Rotary Club of El Paso; St. Mark’s School; and TFCU.
