This year fifteen community scholarships and ten FirstLight Federal Credit Union dependent scholarships were awarded, for a total of twenty-five $1,000 dollar scholarships. The foundation increased its funding through grassroots fundraising initiatives from $19,000 in 2021.
More than 300 submissions were made from the El Paso, Fort Bliss, and Las Cruces communities — representing more than 50 schools from Texas and New Mexico.
“Our volunteer foundation board is thankful to the students, parents, guardians and school administrators for their participation and involvement,” said FirstLight Federal Credit Union President & CEO, Karl Murphy. “We are proud to support students from our region and help contribute to their success,” continued Mr. Murphy.
FirstLight Community Foundation, in partnership with Paso del Norte Community Foundation and Kaleidoscope created a Gen Z-friendly online experience where students uploaded videos answering how the scholarship would benefit them, their family and their community.
“I feel like the video gives the applicant a better opportunity to create a bond with the viewer and allows for the viewer to get to know the applicant,” said Ashley Mascorro, a Bel Air High School graduate who will be attending John Hopkins University to study medicine.
“Through our inaugural golf tournament in October of 2021, we surpassed our fundraising goals and were able to increase the number of scholarships from the previous year,” said FirstLight Federal Credit Union Senior VP of Marketing & Community Impact, Anthony T. Walker. “Our volunteers and employees work to continually build awareness, sponsorships, and in-kind donations to support our area scholars,” added Mr. Walker.
The FirstLight Community Foundation will be hosting their 2nd Annual FirstLight Community Foundation Golf Classic taking place Oct. 28th. To learn more about sponsorship packages visit firstlightfcu.orgTo view the 25 scholarship award recipient’s names, video story, the high school they graduated from, and the college they are attending, visit FirstLight Community Foundation website.
