Flyin’ Miners complete Day One at Texas Relays, Bobcat Invitational

AUSTIN – A trio of UTEP sprinters advanced to the finals in their respective events on day one at the prestigious 93rd Clyde Littlefield Texas Relays at Mike A. Meyers Stadium on Thursday. A combined 10 Miners also set personal bests to open the weekend.

In the preliminary races, Sean Bailey won Heat 2 in the 400m with a time of 46.62. Shakeem Smith finished in first place in Heat 2, clocking a time of 51.40 in the 400m hurdles, and Chevannie Hanson finished second in Heat 1 in the 200m, posting a time of 20.92. All three Miners finished in fifth place overall as the top nine in each event qualified for the March 27 final races.

On Saturday, Bailey will race the 400m dash finals at 2:15 p.m. MT. Smith will compete in the 400m hurdles finals at 2:35 p.m. MT, while Hanson will take the track in the 200m dash finals at 2:55 p.m. MT.

Seven Miners set personal bests on opening day in Austin. Chinique Brown clocked in a personal-best 56.56 in the women’s 400m prelims, and Joshua Hill posted a 47.55 in the men’s 400m prelims. Ned Azemia (53.13) and Ronaldo Griffiths (53.26), a pair of transfers, set their personal bests in a UTEP uniform.

Kenneth Talavera registered a 3:50.20 in the 1500m race, while Karoline Daland clocked in a 10:47.78 in the 3000m steeple for a fourth-place finish. Titus Cheruiyot ran a 14:34.50 in the 5000m.

Freshman Aleks Hristov will start day two at the Texas Relays for the Miners with the discus at 1 p.m. MT. The running events begin at noon MT with the women’s 4x100m relay race. Maribel Caicedo will compete in the women’s 100m hurdles, while Smith will take on the 110m hurdles, as both races will be running simultaneously at noon.

Dennis Johnson will take the track in the 100m dash at around 1:20 p.m. MT.

THE BOBCAT INVITATIONAL – SAN MARCOS, Texas

A trio of Miners set their personal bests in the hammer throw on day one at Texas State’s Bobcat Invitational at the Bobcat Track and Field Complex.

Samantha Cordier posted a 47.76m toss, while on the men’s side Benjamin Coronado heaved a 52.00m mark for a fourth-place showing, and Misael Ortiz registered a 46.49m throw.

The Miners will open competition on day two of the Bobcat Invitational with the women’s discus throw at 8 a.m. MT. Kayla Larry and Cordier will take the field for UTEP.

The track events will begin at 4 p.m. MT with Madeline Jones running the women’s 100m dash.
