Flyin’ Miners complete Day Two at Bobcat Invitational, Texas Relays on Friday

The UTEP track and field team registered a trio of third-place finishes on day two at the Bobcat Invitational at Texas State Track and Field Complex.

The UTEP women’s 4x100m relay team advanced to the finals at the 93rd Clyde Littlefield Texas Relays at Mike A. Meyers Stadium.


Benjamin Coronado opened the day for the Miners with a 46.95m mark in the men’s discus, earning a third-place showing at the Bobcat Invitational. Misael Ortiz registered a personal-best 41.87m mark.

Freshman Kevin Hewitt set his personal best, clocking in a 48.86 and placing third in the men’s 400m dash. Hewitt crossed the finish line first in section 5. Natalia Roberts also set a personal best, posting a 1:00.28 in the women’s 400m dash.

After competing at the Texas Relays on Thursday evening, Titus Cheruiyot took the track in San Marcos and finished third in the men’s 5000m run, clocking in a 14:47.33.

Freshman Nia Reneau leaped 4.90m in the women’s long jump, beating her first collegiate jump of 4.79m at the UTSA Invitational last weekend.

The reigning Conference USA Field Athlete of the Week freshman Ishmel Williams and Emilio Rios will start the day for UTEP in the men’s high jump at 9 a.m. MT.


The UTEP women’s 4x100m relay team advanced to Saturday’s finals after finishing seventh in the preliminaries at the Texas Relays. Maribel Caicedo, Denae McFarlane, Chinique Brown and Oghenekaro Brume posted a 46.11, surpassing last weeks’ time of 46.22.

Freshman Aleks Hristov registered a 52.20m throw in the discus event, surpassing his initial collegiate mark of 42.57m last weekend at the UTSA Invitational.

Sean Bailey (400m dash – 2:23 p.m. MT), Shakeem Smith (400m hurdles – 2:48 p.m. MT) and Chevannie Hanson (200m dash – 3:05 p.m. MT) will compete in Saturday’s finals. The men’s relay team (Jevaughn Powell, Hanson, Joshua Hill, Bailey) will compete in the men’s 4×400 Invitational at 3:30 p.m. MT.

Coronado will make his way from San Marcos to Austin to compete in the shot put at 2:30 p.m. MT to start the final day of the Texas Relays for the Miners.
