UTEP Track & Field: Kidd Field
The UTEP track and field team will make the short trek up Interstate 25 to compete in the Cherry & Silver Invitational this weekend at the Albuquerque Convention Center. The Orange and Blue will have 35 athletes (21 female and 14 male) make the trip.
Events are slated to begin at 4:00 p.m. (MT) on Friday afternoon and Saturday morning at 9:30 a.m. Live stats can be found at liverunningresults.com and for up to date times and marks, follow @UTEPTrack on Twitter.
UTEP will be competing against 17 other universities and junior colleges. The competition on the list includes the likes of Arkansas, Texas and New Mexico.
Fayon Gonzales and Adebola Akomolafe will get the action started off Friday afternoon at 4 p.m. in the weight throw. Kevin Rincon, who set a personal best last weekend, will also be competing in the men’s weight throw at 7 p.m. In other field events, Lucia Mokrasova will be competing in the high jump and Tyler Ragin, Nickevea Wilson and Israel Ramsay will have a go at it in the long jump.
The Miners will have four athletes dashing in the first running event of the meet, the 60m hurdles. The prelims will take placeFriday with the top 16 qualifying for the semifinals on Saturday morning. On the men’s side, Sven Zellner will be the lone Miner to run in this event. Last weekend, Zellner missed a personal best by .01 seconds when he ran 8.08. The women will be sending three athletes to compete in the 60m hurdles. Brittney Trought and Bria Love are coming off solid performances and they will be joined by newcomer Tobi Amusan, who won gold in the 100m hurdles at the 2015 African Games with a time of 13.15 seconds.
The 60m dash prelims will take place following the hurdles and the top 16 times will advance in that event. UTEP has Isak Washington, Nicholas Colbert, Ragin, Ramsay and Alexis Roberts competing in the short sprint.
A foursome of Miners will be running the 3,000m run. On the women’s side, Gladys Jerotich and Winny Koech, who is making her debut, will run at 5:55 p.m. and Antony Kosgei and Evans Kiprono will run at 5:35 p.m.
Timed finals in the 600m run and 200m dash will close out the evening. Daniel Tarango, Esteban Montanez, Yinka Oyebanjo-Odofin, Brittney Adams and Dreshanae Rolle will be competing in the 600m run. The timed finals for the 200m dash will begin at 6:45 p.m. On the men’s side, a total of 58 athletes will run; UTEP will send Colbert, Carnell Horn and Isak Washington to the track. On the women’s side of things, there will be 79 athletes (16 heats); the Orange and Blue will be represented by Imani Adams, Veronica Alvarez, Alexis Roberts and Florence Uwakwe.
On Saturday, only three Miners will compete in field events (Wilson, Mokrasova and Samantha Hall). Wilson will take the fourth-best mark in the country in the triple jump into action and Hall and Mokrasova will compete in the shot put.
Jonah Koech (4:04.98/altitude converted) will be running the mile for the second straight week; his time from last week is the fifth-best in the country. Truphena Sum will be running the 1,600m event for the women.
The 400m dash will start at 1 p.m. Asa Guevara, Carvellion Horn and Tommy McCoy will run that event for the second straight week. On the women’s side, Yanique Bennett and Alvarez will run it. Lilian Koech will close out the individual events at 2:20 p.m. and will look to win her second-consecutive 800m race.
The 4x400m relays will close out the meet at 2:40 p.m.
