The UTEP track and field squad will head to College Station this weekend for the Texas A&M Charlie Thomas Invitational on Friday and Saturday. 32 athletes (23 women and nine men) will make the trek to compete against some top-notch competition.
Teams in attendance will be Texas A&M, Abilene Christian, Arkansas, Baylor, Clemson, Houston, Rice, South Plains CC, TCU, UT-Arlington and UTSA.
The two-day meet will feature a plethora of All American caliber athletes for the Miners to test their skills against. Day one will feature the DMR’s, 5,000m runs, heptathlon and pentathlon.
Only three athletes will compete on day one. Newcomer Kayla Pallares, an El Paso CC transfer, will make her debut in the 5,000m run at 6 p.m. (MT). Evans Kiprono will run the men’s 5,000m run at 6:25 p.m. Lucia Mokrasova will compete in the pentathlon on Friday; this will be her first full pentathlon since arriving in El Paso.
Saturday will be a much busier slate for the Orange and Blue with 29 athletes in action. The fivesome of Tobi Amusan, Rebecca Oshinbanjo (debut), Tyler Ragin,Israel Ramsay and Alexis Roberts will be running in the 60m dash at 11:30 a.m. (MT). Roberts (200m dash/2:55 p.m.) and Amusan (60m hurdles/12 p.m.) will be pulling double duty.
Bria Love and Brittney Trougth will join Amusan in the 60m hurdles.
On the men’s side, Isak Washington will double up in the 60m dash and 200m dash. The triumvirate of Jonah Koech, Daniel Tarango andEsteban Montanez will run the 800 at 3:42 p.m. Sven Zellner will look to continue his solid season in the 60m hurdles with the prelims taking place at 1:00 p.m.
Five women will run in the 400m dash at 2:40 p.m.: the athletes are Florence Uwakwe, Ada Benjamin, Yanique Bennett, Imani Adams andDreshanae Rolle. The only male to compete in the 400m dash this weekend will be Carnell Horn.
In the field events, both Ragin and Ramsay will be long jumping while Nickevea Wilson, who ranks 14th in the country in the triple jump, will look to improve her mark in that event.
The Miners will close out the meet with the women’s 4x400m relay at 4:05 p.m. (MT).
