Flyin’ Miners Prepped for Cherry & Silver Collegiate Invitational

The UTEP track team will take the short trek up I-25 to compete in the Cherry & Silver Collegiate Invitational at the Convention Center in Albuquerque, N.M. on Friday and Saturday.

UTEP will be competing against 18 other schools from around the country. The competition will include the likes of Texas, Stanford and San Diego State.

Connor Graham will start things off on the men’s side Friday afternoon at 4 p.m. MT in the pole vault. In other field events, Austin Ondijio will be competing in the high jump and Kevin Rincon will have a go in the weight throw.

In the first running event, James Bias and Asa Guevara will look to earn a spot in the 60m finals at 4:45 p.m. on Friday. Last week, Bias clocked in a personal best of 6.90. In the 3,000m run Cosmas Boit and Antony Kosgie will lead the Miners after notching silver and bronze last week in Nashville, Tenn.

After being named U.S. Track and Field Cross Country Coaches Association (USTFCCCA) Track Athlete of the Week for his performance in the 800m at the Commodore Invitational, Emmanuel Korir will look to have another stellar run this time in the 600m Friday Night. Joining him will be fellow freshman Michael Saruni, who finished second behind Korir last week in the 800m.

On the women’s side, Fayon Gonzales and Adebola Akomolafe will start the first field event in the weight throw at 4 p.m. on Friday. Lucia Mokrasova will compete in both the high jump (Friday) and the shot put (Saturday).

Tobi Amusan returns in the 60m hurdles after running the eighth fastest time in the nation at the Commodore Invitational.  Prelims are set for 4:25 p.m. on Friday with the top 16 athletes moving on to the semifinals on Saturday and the top eight running the final set for 12:55 p.m.

The Miners will have Ana Molinar and Tyler Ragin competing in the 60m prelims Friday afternoon following the men. Ada Benjamin and Amusan will run the 200m finals set for 7:20 p.m.

In the long distance races Kayla Pallares, Winny Koech and Gladys Jerotich will run in the 3,000m which is the last event on Friday.  Linda Cheruiyot and Truphena sum will compete at 12:10 p.m. on Saturday in the mile run.

The 4x400m relays will close out the meet on Saturday at 3:05 p.m.
