Flyin’ Miners Return to Albuquerque for New Mexico Classic

After a bye week the UTEP track team return to the Albuquerque Convention Center this Friday and Saturday to compete in the New Mexico Classic.

This will be one of the largest meet in terms of entries for the Miners. Teams competing include USC, Texas, Texas Tech and Ole Miss.

Getting the action Friday at 4 p.m. MT in the women’s weight throw will be Adebola Akomolafe, Cierra Chenault and Fayon Gonzales. Tobi Amusan will compete in both the long jump at 4:30 p.m. and 200m. Amusan ran a season-best 23.56 at the Cherry & Silver Invitational, which is ranked 16th in the nation. Israel Ramsay will be the lone Miner in the high jump.

In the first running event Rebbecca Oshibanjo will look to earn a spot in the semifinals in the 60m hurdles. Ana Molinar and Florence Uwakwe will compete in the 60m dash shortly after.

In the long distance race Gladys Jerotich and Kayla Pallares compete in the 3,000m run.  In the mile run Linda Cheruiyot and Winny Koech and Truphena Sum run for the Miners.

On the men’s side, freshman Connor Graham will get things started in the pole vault at 4 p.m. Donivan Ortega pulls double shifts in the triple jump and the long jump with Brandon Moss joining him in the latter. The Miners will have two throwers in the weight throw with Karol Kroncos and Kevin Rincon competing. In the high jump Austin Ondijo will be the Miner competing.

The 200m dash will feature James Bias and Asa Guevara competing in the one day final. In the 3,000m run Daniel Cheruiyot will look to improve his time after setting a personal best earlier this season at the Commodore Invitational.

Saturday’s schedule begins at 10 a.m. with the women’s shot put featuring Samantha Hall and Lucia Makrasova for the Miners. Tyler Ragin will compete in the long jump, the only Miner in the field.

Freshman sensation Emmanuel Korir returns to the convention center after setting a world best in the 600m (1:14.97). Korir will race in the 800m, where he holds the nations fastest collegiate time this season.

Jonah Koech will compete in both the 800m and the mile run along with Cosmas Boit.
