After a week off, the UTEP track and field team will make its second return to Albuquerque to compete at the New Mexico Collegiate Classic on February 7-8 in the Albuquerque Convention Center.
Friday’s events will start at 3 p.m. MT with the women’s weight throw and will conclude at 7:50 p.m. with the women’s 200m.
Saturday’s events will begin at 9:30 a.m. with the men’s “A” pole vault and women’s shot put, and will end at 2:30 p.m. with the women’s 4x400m relay.
The Miners will be competing alongside host New Mexico in which the Lobo women are ranked 12th in the latest rankings. The weekend will also include Alabama, Kentucky (ranked seventh on the women’s side and 15th for the men), Texas (men’s team ranked third, women ranked fourth), UCLA (men ranked 22nd), Texas Tech (ranked 21st in the men’s rankings and 23rd in the women’s rankings), Arizona State, San Diego State and UNLV.
UTEP last competed at the Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Collegiate Invitational in Albuquerque on January 24-25.
Multiple Miners set personal bests as Sean Bailey clocked a 46.51 in the 400m, Cory Calvani recorded a 1:33.66 in the 600m, Sam Zambrano ran a 4:50.47 in the mile run, Titus Cheruiyot registered an 8:28.00 in the 3000m and Rodgers Korir (8:32.90) in the same event, and Benjamin Coronado tossed a 15.94m in the shot put on the men’s side.
Setting personal bests for the women at the MLK Invite were Natalia Roberts who clocked in a 26.98 in the 200m, Aphiniti Crupper recorded a 1:02.41 in the 400m, Joan Kimaiyo tallied a 11:26.64 in the 3000m, Cierra Chenault tossed a 11.65m in the in the shot put, and Samantha Cordier registered a 16.98m in the weight throw.
The Miners will return to Albuquerque for the Don Kirby Elite Invitational on February 13-14 and the Iowa State Classic on February 14-15. The Conference USA Championships will follow on February 22-23 in Birmingham, Alabama.
