The UTEP track and field team will send its athletes to two different meets to wrap up the indoor regular season this weekend. A majority of the athletes (33) will be heading to Albuquerque, N.M., for the Don Kirby Invitational, while four select distance athletes will head to Seattle, Wash., for the Husky Classic.
DON KIRBY INVITATIONAL
The Don Kirby will present a plethora of good competition for the Miners to compete against this weekend. Oregon, with its third-ranked women and sixth-ranked men, headline the field, which also features Stanford (No. 11 men, No. 13 women), Oklahoma State (No. 22 women, No. 24 men) and the No. 13 Colorado men.
As of right now, only one athlete for the Miners is qualified for the NCAA Championships in Birmingham, Ala. Senior Nickevea Wilson holds the 15th-longest triple jump (12.96m) in the nation and the top 16 marks make it to Nationals. Wilson will look to improve her triple jump mark and also compete in the long jump.
The fivesome of Brittney Trought, Tobi Amusan, Bria Love, Lucia Mokrasova and Rebecca Oshinbanjo will hone their technique in the 60m hurdles. Trought (8.36/fastest), Amusan (8.59/fourth fastest) and Love (8.68/seventh fastest) hold three of the top seven spots in C-USA this year. Oshinbanjo and Amusan will also compete in the long jump as well.
Fayon Gonzales (17.57m) and Adebola Akomolafe (17.51m) hold the fifth and seventh-longest weight throws in C-USA this season; the duo will look to improve upon their marks this weekend. Samantha Hall will take the fifth-longest shot put in C-USA into action as well.
Tyler Ragin, who is coming off a personal best last weekend in the long jump (5.62m), will double up in the long jump and 60m dash.

In the sprints, Alexis Roberts and Florence Uwakwe will be the only two in the 200m dash, while Ada Benjamin, Yanique Bennett, Dreshanae Rolle and Roberts will run the 400m dash.
On the men’s side, Jonah Koech is the only Miner close to qualifying for Nationals. Koech’s mile time of 3:59.92 ranks 18th in the nation; the freshman will look to shave a couple seconds or hundredths of seconds off his time to get a qualifying mark for the NCAA Championsips. Fellow Kenyan Evans Kiprono will join him for the mile on Saturday.
Isak Washington, Sven Zellner, Asa Guevara and Yinka Oyebanjo-Odofin will run in the 200m sprint on Saturday. Washington will also run the 60m dash, Oyebanjo-Odofin will try the 400m dash and Zellner will compete in the 60m hurdles.
