The UTEP track and field team will be making its second trip of the outdoor season to the state capital for the Texas Team Invitational at Mike A. Myers Stadium this Friday and Saturday.
There will be 14 schools competing at the meet, including nationally-ranked No. 2 Texas Tech, No. 5 Houston and No. 19 Baylor.
Coming off a stellar performance at the Don Kirby Tailwind, Michael Saruni will compete in the 800m on Friday at 6:40 p.m. MT. The sophomore notched the Conference USA Track Athlete of the Week award for his performance in the 400m last week. His time of 45.53 ranks No. 3 in the nation. Jonah Koech will also compete in the 800m.
Senior Asa Guevara will take part in the 400m and the 4x100m relay. Guevara clocked a personal-best 45.75 last week, earning the No. 7 spot in the nation in the 400m. He will run in the 400m at 1:05 p.m. on Saturday.
Making his return trip to Mike A. Myers Stadium, Shakeem Smith will race in the 110m hurdles and the 400m hurdles. Smith clocked the seventh-fastest time in program history in the 110m hurdles with a time of 14.19 at the Don Kirby Tailwind.
In the 5,000m, Antony Kosgei and newcomer Boaz Ronoh will take the track at 9:20 a.m. on Saturday. Kosgei currently ranks fifth in the league with a season-best time of 14:34.42.
Freshman Benjamin Coronado will see action in the hammer throw on Friday at 9 a.m. and then again in the shot put at 6 p.m.
On the women’s side, junior Lucia Mokrasova will compete in the 200m on Friday at 5:30 p.m. and will return to the track at 7 p.m. for the shot put. Mokrasova is second in the league in the heptathlon when she scored 5,160 points at the Texas Relays.
In the 800m, Lilian Koech and Linda Cheruiyot will race on Friday at 6:30 p.m. Both Miners hold the top spots in the league with Koech (2:07.53) at the helm and Cheruiyot (2:10.57) close behind.
Rebecca Oshinbanjo and Danielle Trought will compete in the 100m hurdles on Saturday at 11:25 a.m. Oshinbanjo ranks second in the conference with a season-best time of 13.73.
This is the fourth outdoor meet of the season for the Miners as the C-USA Championships approach closer on May 13-14.
