County to Host Conference to Recruit, Train Foster and Adoptive Parents

As incidents of child abuse and neglect continue to leave El Paso children in need of foster or adoptive homes, the 65th District Court and CARE Coalition along with other community organizations that work with abused and neglected children are hosting the 2016 CARE Conference.

During FY 2016, Texas Child Protective Services confirmed 2,038 cases of child abuse/neglect in El Paso County. The current wave of child abuse has left 229 children who are currently in foster homes, and 125 minors who are ready and waiting to be adopted.

The conference will take place on Wednesday October 5, from 8:30 a.m. to 6:00 p.m. at the Region 19 Head Start Education Services Center (11670 Chito Samaniego Drive)

The event consists of two parts:

 A professional seminar intended to educate parents and professionals about current trends and approaches to deal with foster/adoptive kids needs.

 An adoption fair to recruit foster and adoptive homes for local abused and neglected children.

The professional seminar features statewide experts on complex needs of vulnerable children, who will discuss among other topics:

 When Psychotropic Medications are not the Answer-An Individual’s Journey

 Gangs In El Paso

 Breaking the Domestic Violence Cycle: Helping Children Learn New Tools

This year for the first time ever an adoption ceremony is scheduled to take place at 4:30 p.m.

During the adoption fair, interested families and individuals will learn about the requirements to adopt a child in Texas and about the financial assistance the government offers to help pay for some of the expenses of the child.

Attendees will also be able to participate in breakout sessions where they will have the opportunity to network with others on specific topics.

Both the professional seminar and the adoption fair are free and open to the public.

Simultaneous Spanish translation will be available. For more information, please visit the webpage or call 915-546- 2102.
