Foster School of Medicine Student selected as 2020 Student Scholar by Society of Teachers of Family Medicine

Jaime Carrillo, a third-year student from the Paul L. Foster School of Medicine at Texas Tech University Health Sciences Center El Paso, has been selected as a 2020 Student Scholar by the Medical Student Education Scholarship Review Committee of the Society of Teachers of Family Medicine.

Carrillo will attend the 2020 Conference on Medical Student Education from January 30 to February 2, 2020, in Portland, Oregon. The conference is an opportunity for attendees to engage in discussion on pressing issues in clinical and educational communities.

Attendees will also collaborate with others from multiple institutions to learn about the important role family medicine plays within the scope of academic medicine.

At the conference, Carrillo will present a project that analyzes the correlation between social media and health campaigns.

Carrillo was among some of the most talented medical students in the nation who were nominated to receive this award.

During his time at the Foster School of Medicine, Carrillo has taken great interest in becoming a primary care physician. He was accepted into the Scholars in Primary Care program, which allowed him to work with Salud Sin Fronteras, a student-run clinic aimed at improving the health of disadvantaged communities in the El Paso region.

While at the clinic, Carrillo targeted issues including social inequalities within the health care system of the Segundo Barrio neighborhood of El Paso. His goal is to continue working to ensure quality health care is administered to uninsured patients.

Carrillo also aims to continue fulfilling TTUHSC El Paso’s mission of providing quality health care to the region by filling a shortage in family medicine physicians within the city of El Paso.

He attributes his work with Salud Sin Fronteras to his success in becoming a 2020 Student Scholar.

“It is a special recognition that reflects the support my wife, family, faculty and staff have given me throughout this journey,” Carrillo said. “I am very thankful to the patients that I’ve been able to learn from at Salud Sin Fronteras. It’s a sign that we are doing something right at the clinic.”
