Beginning Monday July 6, El Paso Water customers can get sandbags for flood control every day of the week at the Stormwater Operations Center located at 4801 Fred Wilson Avenue.
The satellite sandbag locations will not open this year, in the interest of minimizing employee exposure to COVID-19 and maximizing resources where they are needed most.
“In reviewing demand for sandbags over the last few years, the utility has observed a steady decline at some satellite locations, so moving to a single pickup location also made sense to improve efficiency and reduce cost,” officials shared. “In the event of a major flooding event, an emergency stormwater response team will set up sandbag pick-up stations in targeted areas.”
The center will be open from 8 a.m. to 8 p.m. Monday through Friday and 2 p.m. to 8 p.m. on Saturday and Sunday. These hours will remain through the end of September.
“We understand the importance of providing this essential flood control service,” said EPWater Vice President of Operations and Technical Services Alan Shubert.
“Yet, first and foremost, we see the need to scale back locations to protect the health of both our employees and customers.”
Customers in areas prone to flooding are encouraged to pick up their sandbags now, and store them in a shaded location, preferably indoors. The limit is 10 bags per visit.
Customers will need to show a Texas ID or an El Paso Water bill to get sandbags. Persons who cannot lift heavy items should be accompanied by someone who can assist with loading and unloading the bags.
