Gallery+Story: UTEP Softball Splits Saturday Doubleheader

The UTEP softball team (8-11) put together a nearly perfect game with Aalijah Alarcon allowing just one hit and the Miners shredded eight runs on 10 hits in an 8-0 [5] run-rule victory over Incarnate Word (5-13) in front of 300+ fans in attendance.

The two programs split Saturday’s doubleheader as the Cardinals picked up the win in game two, 8-7, on a blustery evening at the Helen of Troy Softball Complex.

GAME 1 | UTEP 8, UIW 0 [5]
The Miners loaded the bases early in the first frame. Lexi Morales led off the bottom first by reaching on an error. Autumn Scott drew a walk, and Pate Cathey singled to second base. Kaylin Jackson reached on a fielder’s choice as Morales was thrown out at home. However, Ajia Richard’s RBI single on a 1-1 count through the left side resulted in Scott scoring to make it 1-0.

After a quiet second inning, Richard came through again for the Miners with a long ball to center field plating Cathey for the 3-0 advantage.

Morales blasted the second home run of the game scoring Savannah Favre after she led off the fourth inning with a walk to extend the lead 5-0.

Toni Gonzalez tripled to center field, allowing Richard to score after she singled up the middle to start the fifth frame. Gonzalez would score the seventh run after a Favre RBI single to the pitcher. With two outs left in the inning, Morales, who finished with a career-high three RBI, shut the door on the Cardinals with a double to center field that brought in Favre to seal the win, 8-0.
