For the first time since 2014, the Miners were victorious Tuesday evening in their own holiday tournament, named for their Hall of Fame Coach.
With the 67-61 victory over UC Irvine at the Haskins Center, UTEP improved to 8 and 1 on the season.
The Miners upped their home mark to 7-0 after defeating North Carolina A&T, 72-54, Monday night. With the win Tuesday night, the unblemished 8-win home record is the best start since the 2003-04 season.
The Miners now prepare for a Thursday match up with Houston.
“We did a great job of attacking the paint and putting pressure on the basket. When you do those kinds of things, it gives itself an opportunity to go to the foul line,” second-year UTEP Head Coach Rodney Terry said. “We got to the line 36 times and we did a pretty good job shooting free throws tonight, making 28 of those. That was a big part of the game.”
UTEP set season highs in made free throws (28) and free-throw attempts (36) for a 77.8 percent clip.
Our very own Ruben R. Ramirez and Johnny Yturales were at the game and we bring you their view of the contest in this ‘Game in Many Pics.’
