Thanks to a new team up between ImagineU by GECU and EVERFI, area high school students will get a chance to participate in the national and local Financial Literacy Bee.
“ImagineU by GECU offers free online financial education tools that empowers Borderland families toward financial freedom, officials with GECU shared Thursday. “Our collaboration with EVERFI, a social impact education company, brings the first-ever Financial Literacy Bee to El Paso, giving high school students in our community a new opportunity to build their financial knowledge for healthy financial futures.”
The national Financial Literacy Bee will select three high school students to win up to $10,000 in college scholarships and 10 local students will be selected to win a $1,000 prize each for higher education.
Organizers add that the virtual financial education challenge runs April 1 through 15, and is open to all high school students in the El Paso area.
Participating students in grades 9–12 will learn about saving, budgeting and investing by completing ImagineU by GECU lessons online. They will have to submit a short essay about their savings goals or a financial dream and how they plan to achieve it based on what they learned from the lessons.
EVERFI will select the top three essays nationwide and the top 10 essays in the Borderland. Three national winners will receive up to $10,000 in college scholarships and 10 local winners will receive a $1,000 prize each for higher education.
“A bright financial future starts with building a strong foundation in financial education. We’re excited to bring the Financial Literacy Bee opportunity to students in the Borderland to help them toward their dreams of higher education,” said Ruby Alvarez, AVP of GECU Community Development.
“The financial knowledge that students gain through the Financial Literacy Bee will be an invaluable resource that will empower them and future generations.”
