Ice Miners Improve to 15 -1 after Weekend Shutout of UT

With a sweep of the University of Texas at Austin (20) this weekend, your UTEP (11) Hockey team improved to 15 and 1.

Ranked 11th in the West Region of the ACHA the Miners opened conference play at home against the ranked (20) Texas Longhorns.

Brett Bloor would open the scoring for the Miners with the first goal of the night off the assist by Kevin Duncan. Texas doesn’t answer and Matt Sanca increased the Miner lead to two goals.

Leading scorer Lukas Znosko kept it going assisted by Jeramy Rezaeepour in the second to make it 3-0 Miners, with his 18th goal of the season. With three minutes remaining in the second Nicholas Howell assisted by Kevin Duncan would put the Miners up 4-0 before heading to the locker room.

In the final period, Lukas Znosko scored his second of the night to give the Miners a 5-0 lead. With Matt Sanca in the box, Texas scored on the power play and gave Texas their first goal of the night, 5-1. Znosko would complete the hat trick with a goal assisted by Mack Hollis and Gabe Goodroe and put the Miners up 6-1. However, the Miners weren’t done yet. Rezaeepour assisted by Duncan, his third assist of the night, gave the Miners their 7th goal of the night. Texas would score another goal late in the third but the Miners win game one, 7-2.

Back for game two Saturday night, Brett Bloor slipped one passed the Texas goalie early in the first, 1-0 Miners. Then after a scramble at the net, Jeramy Rezaeepour found an opening and put the Miners up by 2.

The Miners controlled the second period offensively with three goals scored by Lukas Znosko, Jeramy Rezaeepour and Gabe Goodroe.

In the final period of the weekend, the Miner goal streak would continue with a goal from Jorge Duenas to increase the Miner lead to 6-0. Open in front of the net, Matt Sanca passed to Brett Bloor to score the 7th Miner goal of the night. Texas would get the final goal of the night but the Miners would sweep the series with a 7-1 win in game two.

The Miners improve to 15-1 overall in the season and head back on the road to Austin, Texas to face off against the Texas Longhorns November 18th and 19th.
