Kindness is his mission: 8th Grader inspires others during ‘Month of Unity and Healing’

Despite his young age, Wiggs Middel School 8th grader Ruben Martinez already has a long history of giving back to his community.

At a very young age, Ruben and his mom would visit their neighborhood Luby’s and randomly pick a person at the restaurant and pay for their meal.

This and other kind gestures seemingly embedded in Ruben’s DNA, led him to begin the #ElPasoChallenge, shortly after the August 3rd shooting.

Ruben’s goal was to challenge people to do 22 good deeds or acts of kindness in memory of the 22 people, since 23, who were killed in the tragic shooting.

As the second anniversary of the August 3rd shooting approaches, officials with the Paso del Norte Community Foundation encourage El Pasoans to follow in Ruben’s example to uplift each other through acts of kindness as part of the County of El Paso’s “Month of Unity and Healing”, underway now through August 3.

PdNCF officials invite people to share their acts of kindness on social media using the hashtag, #ElPasoKind.

Recently, Ruben kicked off the PdNCF’s #ElPasoKind campaign by visiting downtown El Paso and handing out roses to people at San Jacinto Plaza. With each rose, he gave a handwritten note asking people to continue spreading love by doing a good deed or a random act of kindness.

“I wanted to show people that hate never wins over kindness,” said Ruben

Whether volunteering time, opening a door, or donating to a favorite charity, the PdN Community Foundation will highlight act of kindness and the spirit and compassion for the people who make up our great city.

Participants share acts of kindness by posting a picture of themselves or organization with a description to social media, along with the hashtag #ElPasoKind.

“Get family and friends to join the challenge and make it a friendly competition,” officials add. “Stories and photos will be shared throughout the summer to highlight these special acts of kindness and motivate others!”
