UTEP’s Vivienne Kulicke, the No. 107 ranked player in the nation, has been named Conference USA’s Women’s Tennis Athlete of the Week, the league announced Tuesday. This is the sophomore’s first C-USA honor and the second for UTEP of the 2016 season.
“We are all happy for Vivienne,” said head coach Roberto Aspillaga. “She has improved immensely and these accomplishments are a nice way to reassure progress in a given process. As a team, we need to continue to focus on improving and making our team identity stronger every day.”
Kulicke became the first nationally-ranked singles player for UTEP in at least ten years when she broke into the ITA rankings at No. 107 on Feb. 23.
The sophomore went 3-1 in matches played over the weekend, leading UTEP to wins over Northern Arizona and Wyoming.
Kulicke captured wins from the first position against both Hanneke Lodewijks of NAU (6-1, 6-1) and Magdalena Stencel of Wyoming (6-4, 6-2). She is now on a five-match win streak in singles.
The Hamburg, Germany native teamed with junior Duda Santos to win one of the two doubles matches from the top of the lineup. The pair topped the Wyoming duo of Magdalena Stencel and Nastya Tokereva, 6-2 on Sunday. Kulicke has helped guide the Miners to a 5-5 start, while sporting a 7-2 record in singles this spring season.
UTEP women’s tennis continues in action on the road this week as the team gets ready to face I-10 rival NM State in Las Cruces, N.M. on Saturday at 11 a.m. (MT).
