Las Palmas Del Sol Healthcare, which includes Las Palmas Medical Center and Del Sol Medical Center, announced Friday its 2021 graduate medical education (GME) program residents.
The new cohort of more than 30 residents, who began on July 1, will include internal medicine, obstetrics and gynecology (OB-Gyn), and transitional year residents.
The transitional year serves as the clinical year prior to advanced residencies in areas such as anesthesiology, dermatology, neurology, rehabilitation, and more.
“We have seen great growth with our GME program—having more than doubled our program’s numbers since our inaugural year in 2018 and broadened the disciplines available to our residents,” Don Karl, chief executive officer of Las Palmas Medical Center, said. “This program continues to attract physicians to the area in specialties that will greatly support our population. The residents, in turn, engage in hands-on and preceptor training that will be beneficial throughout their careers as physicians.”
Las Palmas Del Sol Healthcare invested in the creation of its GME program—which first focused on internal medicine—to bring more physicians with the most up-to-date medical school education to El Paso and train them to better serve the needs of the growing local community.
All residents may be eligible to pursue sub-specialty training in areas such as cardiology, nephrology, gastroenterology and other high-demand health areas.
“These carefully-selected residents represent the next generation of physicians who will care for El Pasoans and our neighbors,” David Shimp, chief executive officer of Del Sol Medical Center, said.
“We’ve celebrated a number of resident graduations over the last few years, and we’re proud to offer this program to even more new medical school graduates and have them learn from our excellent physicians and staff at Las Palmas Del Sol Healthcare.”
Program leadership and core faculty members include Las Palmas Del Sol Healthcare board-certified physicians. Affiliated subspecialists with Las Palmas Del Sol Healthcare will also serve as teaching faculty.
