Legislators, Community Leaders Prepare for Latina/o Summit in El Paso this Saturday

Austin – State Sen. José Rodríguez, Chairman of the Senate Democratic Caucus, will join Senate Hispanic Caucus (SHC) Chair Sen. Sylvia R. Garcia, community leaders, and policy experts at the SHC Regional Latina/o Summit, which is scheduled from 8:30 a.m. to 3:30 p.m., Saturday, May 14th at the El Paso Community College, 9050 Viscount, Building B.

The event is a forum with community leaders, students, experts, organizers, policy makers, and elected officials discussing policy ideas, their impact on local minority communities, and how to encourage more civic engagement with our state elected officials. It is hosted by the Texas Senate Hispanic Caucus and Texas Hispanics Organized for Political Education (TX H.O.P.E.).

The first statewide summit took place in late 2013, and throughout 2014 more than 400 attendees — academics, business leaders, advocates, students, and grassroots leaders — helped develop a Latina/o policy agenda for the 2015 Legislative Session in the areas of health care, education, civic engagement, immigration, and economic opportunity at six regional Latina/o summits, which took place in Austin, San Antonio, Dallas, El Paso, Houston, and the Rio Grande Valley.

In October 2015, the SHC held the second statewide summit to highlight the successes and challenges of the 2015 session. During this calendar year, the SHC will hold a number of regional summits across the state. The El Paso regional summit is the third to take place.
