LGBTQ Groups Join Forces for Conference: ‘The LGBTQ Journey: From the Cradle to the Grave’

On Monday, officials with PFLAG El Paso and the EPCC QSA announced a comprehensive conference to help celebrate LGBTQ History Month and National Coming Out Day.

“The LGBTQ Journey: From the Cradle to the Grave” conference will celebrate and educate the Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, Transgender, and Queer community and its allies in El Paso.

The conference is being organized by Parents and Friends of Lesbians and Gays (PFLAG) and the El Paso Community College Queer Straight Alliance (QSA) student group. It will feature speakers and sessions provided by professionals who serve the LGBTQ community, as well as panels including notable figures in the LGBTQ community who will share their personal experiences.

Topics at the conference will include available legal, psychological, health, and support services; how to become a more effective advocate; and legislative updates.  The conference is free and open to the public.

According to officials, this conference was created after PFLAG El Paso President Grace Perez attended a community medical conference and found resources for the LGBTQ community lacking.

The October conference also celebrates LGBTQ History Month and National Coming Out Day, October 11, as well as supporting LGBTQ individuals as they navigate their gender, and/or sexual orientation at the various stages in their lives. The conference is also intended to provide support and information to family members, allies, and professionals who provide services to LGBTQ individuals.

In addition to hosting support group meetings for members of the LGBTQ community and their families, PFLAG regularly provides workshops and informational presentations to groups including public schools, hospital staff, and legislative groups.

The El Paso Community College Queer Straight Alliance (QSA) student organization serves the nearly 30,000 EPCC students at five campuses. The mission of the EPCC QSA is to educate and encourage acceptance and understanding about issues affecting the LGBTQ community.

The EPCC QSA is open to students who identify as LGBTQ and their allies who are willing to learn about the LGBTQ community and stand up to intolerance and prejudice.

PFLAG El Paso is a 501(c) 3 nonprofit organization dedicated to uniting people who identify as LGBTQ with their families and allies. PFLAG is committed to advancing equality through its mission of support, education, and advocacy.

The conference will be from 8 a.m.–5 p.m. Saturday, October 20 at the Valle Verde Campus Annex of El Paso Community College, located at 919 Hunter Drive.
