Officials with Catholic Extension announced Father Fabian Marquez of El Buen Pastor Mission Church as a finalist for the organization’s 42nd annual Lumen Christi Award.
Father Fabian is being recognized for his devotion to his faith and dedication to strengthen and build his community and parish. Latin for “Light of Christ,” the Lumen Christi Award recognizes a woman religious, priest, group or lay person for their dedication to serving the poor in the most under-resourced dioceses in the United States, showcasing how the power of faith can transform lives and communities.
Father Fabian has guided the El Buen Pastor Mission Church in the Sparks Colonia neighborhood of El Paso, one of the poorest areas in the country, since 2015 as a dynamic, energetic and innovative leader.
Father Fabian is an educator, gifted public speaker and homilist, and a compassionate pastor. Every parish he leads sees an increase in Mass attendance and engagement.
Father Fabian’s leadership was recognized among the entire community after the recent mass shooting. He took extraordinary steps to support each family impacted by the tragedy.
Just hours after the shooting, Father Fabian rushed to a local school that had been turned into a family reunification center to offer his support and help, encouraging everyone to join him in prayer. He attended each funeral and presided over the funeral Mass of Raul and Maria Flores.
Since Father Fabian arrived at El Buen Pastor, parishioners have been re-energized to serve the pastoral needs of the community in many capacities and ministries, especially on social justice issues to help immigrants and refugees.
