The Salvation Army homeless shelter in El Paso has been awarded a $225,000 grant as part of Lowe’s Hometowns, an initiative that is helping to restore and revitalize spaces that serve as the hubs and heartbeats of communities.

For The Salvation Army, this grant will help renovate and refurbish the facility that provides shelter, meals, and case management to individuals and families experiencing homelessness.

This year is the first of a five-year, $100 million commitment from Lowe’s to the communities it serves, with this year’s projects spanning 40 states and Washington, D.C.  Every Hometowns project is expected to be completed by the end of this year, and progress from each project can be seen on social media via #LowesHometowns.

The Salvation Army provides year-round shelter and resources for individuals and families while they search for employment and permanent housing.  “Our building is more than just a shelter,” says Major Floiran Estrada, Commanding Officer in El Paso.  “The Red Shield Family Center is ‘home’ for those with no place to go, and it is certainly in need of significant repairs.”  The grant will allow for updates and repairs to the shelter facility, especially the restrooms and laundry area.  These repairs will ensure residents have access to a clean, safe, and dignified space.

“We are so grateful to Lowe’s for their generosity and investment in the community,” said Major Estrada.  “We are very excited The Salvation Army in El Paso has been selected, and we can’t wait to get to get started!”
