Erandi Martinez took the opening singles match of her senior year in straight sets (7-6, 7-5) as the No. 2 slot for the Miners, but it was not enough to pull off the team upset as UTEP tennis (0-1) fell to Arizona, 6-1, Saturday afternoon.
“It was great to get back out on the court again after 10 months,” UTEP Tennis Head Coach Ivan Fernandez said.
“We fought extremely hard taking several matches to three sets. (Senior Erandi Martinez) played great, winning in straight sets. We have a lot of room for improvement, but I know that we can be competitive with just about anyone. I’m proud of how we competed today, and we hope to keep improving with every match.”
UTEP returns to the El Paso Tennis Club tomorrow afternoon, Jan. 31, at 2 p.m. to face Texas Tech.
Kathleen Percegona and Thássane Abrahim held an advantage midway through their doubles match with the Wildcats, but Arizona’s Gitte Heynemans and Khim Iglupas prevailed, 6-3.
UTEP’s No. 1 doubles grouping – Vanessa Valdez and Eve Daniels – fell, 5-2, in their set against Talya Zandberg and Jelena Lukic. After trailing in the set 5-0, Lyric Bonilla and Veronika Lebisova – both making their Miner debuts – made a comeback to win two sets on court three.
The Miners’ No. 1 Vanessa Valdez won the opening set against Kayla Wilkins, 6-3, but lost the final two (6-3, 6-1). Lebisova battled after dropping the first singles set of her career; she won the second set, 6-4, but lost the third, 7-5.
