The City of El Paso Museums and Cultural Affairs Department’s invites the public to a community meeting next week to discuss the new companion memorial for the Men of Company E to be located in Cleveland Square Park in downtown.
Julio Sanchez de Alba, the selected artist for the project will present his preliminary design and solicit feedback from attendees.
The bravery of Company E is retold in a book, authored by Dave Gutierrez, titled “Patriots from the Barrio,” the true story of El Paso’s famed Company E in WWII.
Company E became the first American unit to oppose Hitler’s Nazi forces on the European continent when they spearheaded the Allied landing at Salerno, Italy. The Company would fight their way up the Italian country towards Rome battling at Mt. Rotondo, San Pietro and the disaster at the Rapido River Crossing.
The memorial is being funded through the two percent allocation for public art component of the Mexican American Cultural Center (MACC).
The MACC is a signature Quality of Life Bond Project approved by El Paso voters in 2012.
