‘Memo’ Garcia, beloved husband, dad, soccer coach caught up in August 3 Walmart Massacre, dies in Hospital

Over eight months after the shooting rampage that killed 22 people at the Cielo Vista Walmart, the final victim died Saturday night at Del Sol Hospital.

EP Fusion coach Guillermo ‘Memo’ Garcia, also known by all as ‘Tank,’ died late Saturday night.  The announcement was made by fellow Fusion coach Luis Calvillo on Sunday.   Below is Coach Calvillo’s social media post.

Calvillo and Garcia were shot at the Walmart that Saturday morning, where they were fundraising along with members of the team. ‘Memo’ remained at Del Sol where he was treated for the gunshot wounds since that day.   His wife Coco was also shot in the leg during the attack.

Del Sol Medical Center CEO David Shimp released a statement to the press Sunday afternoon, expressing the entire hospital staff’s grief.

“After a nearly nine-month fight, our hearts are heavy as we report Guillermo “Memo” Garcia, our last remaining patient being treated from the El Paso shooting, has passed away,’ Shimp shared via email.

“His courage, his strength and his story have touched many lives, including those of our caregivers, who tirelessly fought with him and for him every step of the way. We are grieving with his family and with our community.”

Memo is survived by his wife and two children; shortly after the shooting, a GoFundMe was set up, if you would like to donate to the fund, click here.

With Memo’s death, the unfortunate tally of the August 3rd massacre now stands at 23.
