HOT SPRINGS VILLAGE, Ar. – UTEP’s Valeria Mendizabal set a school record with a score of 65 in the second round of the Little Rock Golf Classic as the Miners moved up to third place as a team on Monday at Diamante Country Club in Arkansas.
Mendizabal’s score of 65 on Monday broke the previous school record of 66, which was achieved numerous times by several former Miners. The junior began the day tied for third place, but her record-breaking performance in the second round secured her spot atop the leaderboard entering the final round.
As a team, UTEP shot 3-under-par in the second round of the tournament with a team total of 285 on the day. Entering the third and final round, the Miners are alone in third place at 9-over and eight shots off the lead, which is held by WKU (+1).
In addition to Mendizabal’s performance on Monday, the Miners were also led by Abbie Anghelescu, who finished the day tied for third place individually after shooting a career-low 68 in the second round, a five-shot improvement from day one. Anghelescu sits at 3-under-par (141) entering Tuesday’s final round.
UTEP’s Audrey Haddad shot 78 (+6) on Monday to enter the final round at 8-over-par, while Sophie Delfosse and Shannon O’Dwyer both improved their scores from the first round to the second. Delfosse shot 74 on Monday, a nine-shot improvement from Sunday, while O’Dwyer shaved three shots off her opening-round score after shooting 79 (+7) in the second round.
UTEP will tee off beginning at 7:30 a.m. MT on Tuesday morning, while the Miners will be paired with WKU and Bradley in the third and final round.
