The UTEP men’s golf squad will head to Texarkana, Ark., this Sunday through Wednesday for the 2016 Conference USA Championships. The tournament will take place at the par 72 (6,935 yards) Texarkana Country Club for the fifth time in the last six years.
The four-day tournament will begin Sunday and conclude on Wednesday afternoon (April 24-27). The first three days (Sunday–Tuesday) will be stroke play. After the completion of 54 holes, the top four teams with the lowest stroke total will move onto match play Wednesday. The match play semifinals will take placeWednesday morning and the finals will follow that afternoon.
UTEP will send Frederik Dreier, Andreas Sorenson (73.4 avg.), Nicklas Pihl (74.4 avg.), Charlie Corner (73.2 avg.) and Ben Getman (75.8 avg.) to the tournament.
UTEP is currently ranked No. 85 in the country by Golfweek.com. There are five other C-USA teams ranked inside the top 100 (#40 UAB, #62 North Texas, #79 Charlotte, #89 Rice and #91 UTSA). Dreier is UTEP’s top ranked individual at No. 169; Dreier is currently averaging a career-best 71.7 strokes per round while collecting four top-10 finishes. The junior has been UTEP’s top finisher in seven of the 10 tournaments played this year.
Dreier and Pihl are the only two members of the five traveling to have C-USA Championship experience. At the 2015 C-USA Championships, Pihl finished tied for 13th in the stroke play portion at three-over par (219) and Dreier placed tied for 23rd at six-over par (222).
