Ice Miners Sweep Texas State, Improve to 11-1; UNM in ABQ up Next

The UTEP Miners Hockey Club left El Paso for a two game road trip against the Texas State Bobcats Saturday, October 29th and Sunday, October 30th.  Coming of a sweep at home against Northern Arizona, the Miners were looking to continue their winning streak.

Saturday night both teams came out strong offensively in the first period.  The Miners would open the scoring as Kevin Duncan ripped a shot top shelf on the power play less than two minutes into the game. However, the Bobcats would respond shortly after on their own power play to tie the game.

As the teams traded chances throughout the first period, the Miners would once again find themselves on the power play.  Brett Bloor would break the tie late in the first period to put the Miners up 2-1. However, the Miners were not done.  With less than a minute left in the first period, Jeramy Rezaeepour would increase the lead to 3-1.

The Miners would increase their lead in the second as Bloor would once again score on the power play to put the miners up 4-1.  The Bobcats would not go away as they would once again respond on their own power play to cut the lead in half to 4-2. Miners leading scorer Lukas Znosko would add to his point total as he would score even strength to put the Miners up 5-2.

Shortly after, Dominic Foggia would score his first as a Miner to put the Miners up by 4 (6-2) just past the half way point of the second period. With less than two minutes left in the second frame and the Bobcats once again on the power play, they would once again score to cut the Miners lead in half to close out the second period 6-3.

In the final period, the Miners would strike early once again. Jeramy Rezaeepour would score his second of the night less than 2 minutes into the 3rd period making the score 7-3.  However, with less than 5 minutes left in the game, the Bobcats would score twice to put pressure on the Miners cutting the lead to 7-5.  With less than a minute left in the 3rd and the net empty for the Bobcats, Rezaeepour would complete the hat trick and score to make the final score 8-5.

With a quick turnaround for both teams, they took the ice Sunday morning. Matt Sanca would score twice in the opening period to put the Miners up 2-0, his first even strength and his second on the power play. Although both teams had several opportunities in the first period, Sanca’s goals would be the only two of the first period.

The second period once again saw the Miners prove their dominance offensively. The Miners would have four different goal scorers in the second period as Brett Bloor, Lukas Znosko and Josh Baeza would all find the back of the net.  Scoring the fourth goal of the frame, Garrett Goodroe would pot his first goal of the season to put the Miners up 6-0 at the end of the second period.

In the 3rd and final period of the weekend, the Miners gave up a shorthanded goal to the Bobcats. However, Lukas Znosko would still take advantage of the power play and score his second goal of the night to increase the lead to 7-1.  Not done there, Znosko would score his 3rd of the day shorthanded to increase the lead to 8-1.

Matt Sanca would follow suit and also complete his own hat trick scoring on the power play to put the Miners up 9-1. The Miners would strike two more times in the third as Jorge Duenas would score on the power play and Brett Bloor would get his second of the night even strength.  The Bobcats would add a late goal, but the Miners would win 11-2 in dominating fashion.

The Miners improve to 11-1 on the season.  They will travel to Albuquerque to take on the UNM Lobos Friday, November 4th and Saturday November 5th who are 10-0 on the season. Both games will be at the Outpost Arena at 8:00pm.

The Miners will then return to home ice to take on the University of Texas Longhorns (9-2 overall) in a TCHC matchup November 11th and 12th.
